We were very pleased to be asked to design a really important document for the Institute for Public Policy Research, their A Northern Energy Strategy Report. A vision for a cleaner, greener future of energy production for the north of England.
This is a serious document and the design had to be considered and appropriate. The report contains a lot of complex information and the client was keen that this was as accessible as possible, and that key sections could be found quickly and easily.
We were keen to develop a brand look for the document that could be carried forward to other creative work for the client providing consistency with communications and helping to give the IPPR North a distinct tone of voice independent of the London based IPPR.
We carried out extensive research into icons, graphic symbols and way-finding systems to develop a concept based on road signs to represent The North. The final brand mark was an upward-pointing chevron that we repeat on the covers and title pages, as well as throughout the document in the bullet points.
We use a bold colour palette, developed from the IPPR brand guidelines, and combine this with a contemporary illustration style to give the document a modern, stylish feel.
A set of icons was created to match the illustration style to help visualise the various types of energy production, alongside an Energy Map of the north of England.
The document was printed with 300gsm inners and a 450gsm cover, ring-bound with a clear spot UV finish on the cover. An interactive digital version was also created for download from the clients website.
The report was presented to the national media, government officials and stake-holders at a press conference in Manchester and has been extremely well received.
The document sets out a vision to create an energy economy worth £15 billion and create 100,000 jobs by 2050. Our hope is that by ensuring the report is as accessible and as beautifully designed as possible we have helped in some way to achieve this.
The Northern Energy Report is a really important document for us, the culmination of years of work and so the design of it was a big deal. We’ve worked with Flow before and knew we could rely on them to deliver the exceptional standards we expect.
